This site is a place to share my passion for a very fascinating carnivorous plant called Dionaea muscipula, which is commonly known as the Venus Fly Trap or VFT in short.
It all started a couple of years ago when I saw a picture of it while surfing for Exotic pets and wondered how Cool would it be to own one. Later that year, while waking in a Orchidarium I was surprised to find specimen. But that one plant cost me 800 pesos for a mature plant… It just looked so cool and I just knew I had to get one!
After 2 years of trial and error and a few purchases here and there I ended up with a hefty collection of Venus fly traps and some Pitcher Plants too.
All that time made me realize that there aren’t many people in the Philippines taking care of these plants. I think it’s probably because of the weak structure to support Venus Fly Traps in the Philippines that makes people very hesitant to get one.
Venus Fly Trap Ownership in the Philippines
VFT's are hard to purchase: Only a few people are selling these plants in the country making them quite expensive especially if you get them in bigger mature forms. Getting them online is quite cheap but shipping and money conversion costs will cost more than the plants itself. Moreover there is also a high certainty that the plant will be not be delivered or held by customs for permits and “charges”.
VFT's are hard to keep alive: Information on the web helps but not quite specific on the needs of these plants in the Philippines. It took me about a year to get a hand on how to balance the plants needs. Plants purchased online are also shipped bare root, no pot nor soil. This greatly decreases its survival rate in the hands of a person just starting or does not have actual experience with these plants.
VFT's are hard to get potting materials: The materials needed for the survival of these plants are not that common in the country. Some of potting material you can get only in bulk quantities making it uneconomical to start just a few plants.
If these barriers are broken I know people would have more interest in this plant. And this is the inspiration of this site, to provide you guys with the easiest way to obtain and an avenue to share proven techniques cultivate and grow healthy Venus Fly Traps.
